What is Collocation?

As per the Cambridge dictionary, the meaning of collocation is as follows:

  1. “a word or phrase that is often used with another word or phrase, in a way that sounds correct to people who have spoken the language all their lives, but might not be expected from the meaning.”
  2. “The combination of words formed when two or more words are often used together in a way that sounds correct”

Understanding collocation will help you to improve your English writing and speaking skills. It is very important to know collocation terms and use of incorrect collocation can cause language errors.

PTE academic exam is a test where you need to demonstrate your English language level as a native English speaker. If you use correct collocation terms, that will demonstrate your English language ability like a native English speaker and you can prove your English speaking and writing skills effectively.

Types of collocation in the English language:

As per our analysis, there are total six collocation types. We will discuss in brief for clear understanding.

1) Adjective + Noun

In this type collocation term is formed by joining an adjective with a noun. Below are some of the examples:

2) Noun + Noun (Also called as a collective noun)

4) Adverb + Adjective

5) Verb + Preposition phrase

In this type collocation term is formed by joining a verb with preposition phrase. Below are some of the examples:

run out of money
make up your mind
springs into life

6) Verb + Adverb

In this type collocation term is formed by joining a verb with an adverb. Below are some of the examples:

speaks politely
waited patiently
driving slowly

These are 6 types of collocation types that you should be aware of. Now we will see what you should do in order to learn collocation. Below are some of the ways in which you can learn collocation:

  • Read newspapers, magazines or novels in English.
  • Use collocation phrases and try to speak English with your friends and family.
  • Try to find out collocation phrases from books and newspapers and highlight them.
  • Learn collocations in groups. That is a better way to learn collocation.
